Signage for PNC Firstside Park

Earlier this year Red Star was approached by PNC Bank to create some “no smoking/no skateboarding” signage for their Firstside Park, the 1.5 acre park created in downtown Pittsburgh last year. The park is located across from PNC’s Firstside Center on First Avenue right off Grant Street.

Here is an initial sketch from PNC of what they envisioned the signs looking like:

After some discussions with the folks at PNC and some visitations to the park, the Red Star design team and PNC came to agreement on the following design.

Recently the design finally hit our shop floor for fabrication. Step one was creating a full size version of the drawing.

Here’s a couple shots of the guys working on the tree trunks. The trunks are made by scabbing together pieces of steel pipe. The hole in the side of the trunk is where there will be a removable section that will act as a cigarette butt depository.

Not your everyday lumberjack! The making of a steel tree.
