Building A Bird

Recently after seeing the PNC Firstside signs we were working on, a client requested that we work some tree structures and birds into their railing project. As you can see from this concept sketch, there will be a contemporary rail design incorporating a tree upright with a nest and a landing falcon.

Aside from the falcon with the outstretched wings pictured in the concept drawing, there will be a second falcon. This falcon will be mounted on the branch of an actual tree on the client’s property. This is the first part of the project that is being worked upon.

Lots of photos for this update!!

Step one involves making full-size drawings of the bird.

Then we start from the bottom…

...and work our way up…

...and keep going from there.

The strips of steel that will make up the wing feathers getting hot in the forge.

Once the strips of metal are glowing hot, a chisel and the powerhammer are used to create the texture of the feathers.

With a wing added!
